Clean water shouldn't cost the planet
At Filtrate, we believe nobody should have to choose between healthy hydration, environmental responsibility, and convenience. Our filter water bottles are designed in the UK to remove the contaminants in tap water that bottled water won't fix, without adding to the plastic waste it creates.
Six values that shape every Filtrate bottle
From the materials we choose to the contaminants we remove, every decision Filtrate makes traces back to these six values.
Cleaner water, by design
Our alkaline filter system removes microplastics, chlorine, lead, fluoride, heavy metals, pesticides, and bacteria from UK tap water. TÜV SÜD safety inspected for verified performance.
Less plastic waste
One Filtrate filter replaces around 500 single-use plastic bottles. Reusable bottles, recyclable cartridges, and minimal packaging make the right choice the easy choice.
Independent safety testing
Filtrate filters are tested and certified by TÜV SÜD, an independent global safety body. We don't ask you to trust our marketing claims; we publish the verification.
Affordable for everyone
Bottles from £14.99, replacement filters from £2.99. Cleaner water shouldn't be a premium luxury. We price our products so they pay for themselves in weeks vs bottled water.
BPA-free, food-safe materials
Every Filtrate bottle uses food-grade stainless steel or BPA-free Tritan plastic. No bisphenols, no phthalates, no leaching chemicals. Just water that tastes the way it should.
Built for UK water
UK tap water is treated, chlorinated, and travels through ageing infrastructure. Filtrate is engineered specifically for UK water sources, not adapted from US or EU designs.
What Filtrate removes (and why it matters)
UK tap water is safe by every regulatory standard, but "safe" and "ideal" are different things. Here's what's actually in your tap water and what our filter does about it.
| Contaminant | Why it's there | Filtrate removes |
|---|---|---|
| Chlorine | Added by UK water companies as disinfectant | Yes |
| Microplastics | UK research detects microplastics in tap water | Yes |
| Lead | Risk in pre-1970 UK properties with lead pipes | Yes |
| Fluoride | Added in some UK regions (West Midlands, North East) | Yes |
| Heavy metals | From environment and old plumbing | Yes |
| Pesticides | Agricultural runoff in raw water | Yes |
| Bacteria | Risk during local contamination events | Yes |

The plastic problem we're fixing
The UK throws away an estimated 7.7 billion single-use plastic water bottles every year. Less than 60% are recycled. The remaining 3+ billion go to landfill or oceans, where they break down into microplastics that re-enter the food chain and water supply.
Bottled water is part of the problem in another way too. Peer-reviewed research found bottled water contains an average of 240,000 plastic particles per litre, 90% of them small enough to enter the bloodstream. The bottle is shedding into the water it contains.
A single Filtrate filter cartridge replaces around 500 of those single-use bottles. Over a year of typical daily use, one bottle and 4-6 filter changes replace approximately 2,000-3,000 plastic bottles per person.
- Reusable bottles built for years of daily use, not weeks
- Replaceable filters mean the bottle stays in service
- Filter subscription reduces packaging from one-off shipments
- Recyclable cartridges reduce end-of-life landfill impact
- Stainless steel doesn't shed microplastics like plastic bottles
- Free UK shipping over £50 consolidated delivery footprint

What customers ask us most
Why is filtering tap water better than buying bottled water?
UK tap water meets strict regulatory standards (the Drinking Water Inspectorate confirms 99.97%+ compliance), but it still contains residual chlorine, possible lead from older plumbing, and small amounts of microplastics. Filtering removes those at home for around 1-2p per litre, vs £1+ per litre for bottled water that contains far more microplastics. It's cleaner, cheaper, and dramatically reduces plastic waste.
How does Filtrate compare to BRITA or Chilly's?
Chilly's makes excellent insulated reusable bottles, but doesn't filter water. BRITA filter bottles handle chlorine taste but don't remove lead, fluoride, or comprehensive contaminants. Filtrate's alkaline filter system removes all of the above at a £24.99 price point that beats both alternatives. For the full comparison, see Filtrate vs Chilly's.
Are Filtrate bottles really BPA-free?
Yes. All Filtrate bottles use food-grade stainless steel or BPA-free Tritan plastic, fully compliant with UK and EU food contact regulations. No bisphenols, no phthalates, no flame retardants. Stainless steel models additionally avoid microplastic shedding that even quality plastic bottles can show over years of daily use.
How long do Filtrate filters last?
Each filter cartridge handles 200-300 litres of filtered water, which works out to roughly 2-3 months at typical daily use. Replacement filters cost from £2.99, or join the filter subscription for 20% off and automatic delivery every 2 months. Compared to bottled water at £1+ per litre, filtered Filtrate water works out to roughly 1-2p per litre.
What happens to the filter when it expires?
The cartridge body is recyclable through standard plastic recycling. We're working toward a take-back recycling scheme for spent cartridges to recover the activated carbon and minerals. In the meantime, dispose of expired cartridges with household recycling.
